Idea for Blogger

For an ordinary blogger like me, the spam comments seems to come mostly with a delay of at least a few weeks (presumably after the spambots have decided which posts to spam), whereas most of the legitimate comments come within a few days. I’d rather not subject legitimate commenters to those annoying human-readable text tests if I don’t have to. Here’s my suggestion: Blogger should have a time delay (chosen by the blogger) before applying the test. So if you comment within, say, the first 3 days, your comment will go straight through, whereas if you comment a month later, you’ll be subject to a security check. (Or do they already have this feature, and I don’t know about it?)

With a tiny bit more thought, the delay needs to be blog owner adjusted instead of one size fits all. Otherwise the spammers will adjust far too easily and all beat the deadline.

Another variation would be to have a feature that enables the blog owner to disable new links published after x amount of time.

Good idea. Here's another solution:
In your dashboard window select "settings" and "comments."
You'll see "Show word verification for comments?" This forces your readers to re-write a funny-looking jumble of letters each time they leave a comment, thus preventing spam-bots. Or perhaps you know about this and prefer not to use it.
Also, if you haven't switched to Beta Blogger I'm not sure if you'll see this feature.

Oh, excuse me. I guess I didn't read too carefully. You're right, they're a pain.

Sometimes genuine would-be contributers may lose internet access (away from home or such things) and miss the opportunity to make that three day deadline or need more time to keep up and/or think of some appropriate reply.
Geez, three days, c'mon. I've waited for important responses much much longer than that.

Yup, I see the same patterns. It sometimes seems as though the spambots select random posts from my archives.

My biggest beef with WordPress (which catches nearly every spam message) is that it sends spam to the moderation queue, where I have to pick through it looking for legitimate commenters.

A delayed un-authentication system sounds like it might help.
